Students Accepted Into Four-Year Colleges & Universities

Each day, Minds Matter is inspired by the commitment and drive of the students we serve. Our students choose to spend their Saturdays improving their academic abilities and preparing themselves for the future. They are determined and focused, and understand fully the value of higher education to their success.

Applying To Minds Matter Of Seattle

Are you a high-achieving high school freshman with a GPA of 3.0 or higher?

Do you qualify for free or reduced-price lunch?

Will your guidance counselor or teacher nominate you for Minds Matter?

Are you interested in attending a summer enrichment program after your sophomore and junior years?

Would you benefit from free SAT/ACT prep classes, writing, critical thinking, and math instruction, and having two mentors to support you through three years of preparing for college success?

Can you commit to attending Minds Matter sessions on Saturdays during the school year (excluding holidays) from 10:00am to 2:00 or 2:30pm in downtown Seattle, and to doing the additional 2-4 hours of homework Minds Matter assigns each week?

If so, we encourage you to apply to be part of the Minds Matter of Seattle class of 2019, which kicks off in the fall of 2016!

Application Process

To apply to be a Minds Matter of Seattle mentee, please follow the following steps:

  1. Be Nominated. If you haven’t been nominated, ask your guidance counselor or teacher to nominate you by filling out the online nomination form.
  2. Apply. Fill out the online application and submit it.
  3. Parent’s Permission. Ask your parent(s) to fill out the parent form and submit it.
  4. Teacher Recommendation. Ask a teacher to fill out the teacher recommendation form and submit it.
  5. Interview to be a Minds Matter Scholar. We will contact you upon submission of all application materials.

Please NoteEach form must have the exact same first name, last name, and date of birth for you.  You must also select “Seattle” as the chapter before beginning each form.  Once we receive your application, the parent form, and the teacher recommendation, we will contact you for an interview.

Interview Materials

You will need to bring the following items with you to the interview (it’s a good idea to start gathering them together now):

  1. Official Transcript from your school’s registrar’s or guidance counselor’s office in a signed, sealed envelope.
  2. Identification. Please bring one of the following forms of ID: a) copy of your U.S. passport, b) front and back copy of your Green Card , c) copy of your U.S. visa, d) a copy of their birth certificate, or e) copy of your Social Security card. *If you do not have any of these items, please bring official identification from the country in which you were born.
  3. Financial Records. Please bring one of the following documents to prove financial eligibility:

a) Federal Tax Forms. Copy of both parents’ or guardians’** most recent signed federal tax form, including:

–IRS form 1040

–W-2 form

–All schedules

b) Or, an official letter for families on government assistance who have not filed taxes in the past three years. Please submit an official letter from a social worker or school counselor attesting to this.

**Minds Matter needs to see these documents for both parents/guardians, even if they are divorced or separated and you live with only one of them. If you are unable to obtain this information for a noncustodial parent, please have your parent complete the “noncustodial parent waiver petition” at the end of the parent form.

Timeline

  • February 1, 2016 - Application available online
  • April 20, 2016 – Applications due
  • May 31, 2016 – Application decisions sent
  • Fall 2016 – Incoming sophomores begin session
